Beautiful Mind

Overall Rating: B? I guess? Nothing terrible here but nothing great either.
Subtitles: I recall a couple clunky translations but overall I think these were pretty solid.
Brief Synopsis: A surgeon with a medical condition that prevents him from feeling empathy and a passionate cop team up to solve a slew of murders happening inside the hospital. Watch it on Viki here.

Ending Type: This was a happy ending pretty much, our main couple was together, Young Oh was healing, things seemed pretty solid despite pretty much nobody having any consequences for their actions.
Characters:
Lee Young Oh (Jang Hyuk)
Gye Jin Sung (Park So Dam)
Hyun Sook Ju (Yoon Hyun Min)
Kim Min Jae (Park Se Young)
Lee Gun Myung (Heo Jun Ho)
Ratings:
-Characters: B. Gye Jin Sung was adorable and charming as all Park So Dam’s characters are, but there was nothing to her. She was a plucky cop and also someone with a serious medical condition which conveniently placed her in critical parts of the story, but on her own she was nothing and her ultimate motivations or dreams or really…. anything were not clear. She just kind of existed in her cute little form whenever she was needed in the story. Young Oh was definitely the main focus of the story but they did the thing where lack of empathy means he also feels nothing else so he’s mostly just an asshole. When he came into his own towards the end he was kind of interesting but still not great.
-Story: C. Big mess. Was this a medical drama? A murder mystery? A trauma survival story? A romance? It was somehow all but not enough of any to be any of them either. The focus was just way off.
-Relationships: C. I guess the very dark father-son relationship was interesting but only for a couple episodes, then it got repetitive. I cared about the relationships of literally no one else in this show. Did they even have relationships? Unclear.
-Romance: B. Some really, really cute moments between our lead couple but the pacing of this show was SO OFF. They had almost no screen time together in the first half of the show, and even in the second half when it was clear they were going to go the romance route the screen time dedicated to it was almost non-existent. The fact that he donated his lung to save her was wonderful and beautiful but there was definitely not enough buildup to make it feel like a great romance.
Free Form Review:
This was just boring, y’all. I think honestly a big thing is it could not figure out what the central story was or what the focus was. There was a big hospital murder conspiracy that I frankly don’t think actually was resolved? And some doctors who had to deal with ethical dilemmas and a guy who couldn’t feel empathy but also maybe could? Also a plucky cop who showed up every now and then and the main doctor guy who couldn’t feel things fell for her for some reason and even more baffling was her reciprocation of those feelings.
There wasn’t anything that drew me in and I honestly skim-watched a lot of it because I just very much was not invested in anything. It was sad because I love so many of these actors but…. they can’t all be winners I guess.
High Points: Park So Dam is adorable.
Low Points: This story did not know what it was.
